    For years large commercial brands have led us to believe that a tall glass of their orange juice is the epitome of refreshment, capturing the natural freshness of an orange plucked from the sunshine groves of California. We even believed it until we looked into fruit juice production methods for ourselves.

    Today the juice market is still dominated by larger brands using production methods designed to preserve the fruit juice for longer periods of time, without the need for refrigeration. Through the use of heat methods (which destroy the natural vitamin content), additives and preservatives to reduce costs and quality, with no regard for the misleading impression of freshness and health they portray to their customers.

    The Juice Market Is Changing – 3 Ways To Identify A Healthier Juice

    The good news is there are healthier options out there.     We have listed a couple of easy ways to help you to identify a healthy fruit juice, because it’s not always easy with the somewhat misleading terminology used on juice labels.

    1. A healthy juice should naturally separate. 

    Separation occurs naturally with no additives or preservatives so it’s a really easy way to quickly identify whether a juice is natural or not. You can see the separation in our Mello juices…

    2. The taste and flavour should not be the same all year round

    Fruit naturally tastes different throughout the seasons or from one region to the next. So if the juice has a unique taste to a particular brand that never changes all year round it is not likely to be very natural. The following production process can be used to create that consistency:

    • Once squeezed from the fruit, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed- by removing the oxygen it allows the liquid to keep without spoiling for a year or more giving it a longer shelf life. However, in doing that it also renders the juice flavourless.
    • Fragrance companies are employed create a trade mark taste and these are added as flavour packs into the giant tanks to re-flavour the juice.
    • Leaving you with what is essentially flavoured juice with added sugars, preservatives and flavourings, with no natural health benefits of the original fruit.

    3. You will never find a truly natural juice on a supermarket shelf outside of the fridge

    Have you ever stopped to think how it’s possible that you can grab a carton from a non-refrigerated shelf and the use by date is 2 years from now; but an orange sitting on a shelf for 2 years would have wrinkled to a moldy relic of its former self?

    Some juices can sit out on the shelves without being refrigerated for months, if not years on end because they are likely to have been heat pasteurised to a high temperature, killing the natural nutritional value of the fruit and replacing it with additives and preservatives. There is then nothing natural left in the juice so it can preserve itself for longer periods of time without being chilled.
